Kaveh Sarvarian
Musician and Composer
Born in Tehran in 1976, at the age of sixteen, he was already self-taught in playing tombak and ney, two of the most representative instruments of Persian music. Subsequently, he pursued studies in classical Persian music at the University of Art in Tehran. Additionally, he took private lessons in flute, harmony, and composition with renowned masters.
In 1998, he won the first prize for best flutist in the national university student competition. In 2000, his composition “Fuga en Homayoon” for string quartet received the first prize at the prestigious Fadjr festival. After completing his Master’s in Composition (MA), he worked for 4 years as a professor at the Superior Conservatory and the University of Art in Tehran, as well as a flutist in the National Symphony Orchestra.
He has released several albums: “Parisan” (quartets for ney), “Moonlight Sky” (classical Persian music), “Ofogh” (Persian music and Spanish guitar), “Sound of the East” (Persian music on a journey to Spain), “Kereshmeh” (a new perspective on Persian music), “Madar” (inspired by Arabic and Persian music), and “When the Sun Rises” (a dialogue between Arabic and Persian music). In some of his albums, he explores the combination of classical Persian music with other musical languages such as jazz, Arabic music, or flamenco.
He has participated in various cultural projects and has also published 3 books: a comprehensive method for Persian ney, ornamentations of Persian music for ney, and tombak lessons. Since 2011, he has been residing in Spain and collaborates on various early music projects and festivals.
Hames Bitar
Musician, Composer, and Soloist
Born in Syria in 1968 into a family with a musical tradition, Hames Bitar learned the Oud from his father and has been involved in music since a young age. His curiosity led him to explore Western music with the guitar, and in Spain, he became interested in flamenco.
He has participated in numerous Arabic music ensembles and performances, both as a lute player and as a musical director, recording with many artists such as Radio Tarifa, Javier Paxariño, Michael Oliver, among others.
He recorded the album “Puertas de Oriente” with the El Ligado Andalusí Foundation, and along with other musicians, he formed the group DARAWISH, which released its first album “MADAR” in 2020.
Luis Taberna
Percussionist specialised in Middle Eastern percussion
Luis Taberna is a passionate percussionist with a focus on Middle Eastern percussion. Having lived in Tunisia and traveled extensively through Turkey, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, he has received training from renowned masters such as Glen Vélez, Ruben Van Rompaey, Zohar Fresco, and Yshai Afterman.
Currently, he collaborates with numerous projects spanning Ancient Music, Andalusian Music, Sephardic Music, Folklore, World Music, and Fusion. He is also dedicated to percussion and rhythm education, teaching at institutions such as TAI (University School of Arts Madrid), Casa Árabe Madrid, and Berkeley College of Music Valencia.
